Ah, blogging. Everywhere you turn, it seems as if someone you know has a blog site that they keep up with or at least try to keep up with every now and then. Blogging has gained significant popularity over the years as an efficient means of communicating with the public in order to drive business to a particular web site or simply for informational purposes. At the heart of it all, blogging is meant to be fun and enjoyable for those who stop by. But what exactly is a blog?

A blog is very similar to a web site. Depending on the type of blog that you have or want, a blog site can look just like a web site and in many cases, blogs can actually be incorporated into a person's website so that others don't have to bother with clicking around to get where they need to go. Typically, blogs are there to provide information about a particular product or brand. Many professionals have their own personal blogs that they keep in addition to whatever company website that they have. Blogs are more personal and help readers get to know the author on a more intimate level.

Many people nowadays find blogging enjoyable as it makes them feel like Internet professionals. Admittedly, it is kind of neat to be the proud owner of a blog, and in a lot of cases, depending on how many devoted readers you have to your blog, you can actually stand to make quite a profit from blogging. For example, look at the popular conservative blogger, Michelle Malkin. Michelle has almost exclusively (if not so) made her living off of her blog, which is nationally known throughout the country. Of course, it also helps that she has stirred up quite a bit of controversy for her political views on certain red button issues.

Blogging when coupled with social media is excellent for driving businesses. For example, if you have a blog site that links back to a company web site, you might join Twitter and gain a following of people there. In theory, if you build meaningful relationships with these people on Twitter, they'll notice that you have a blog linked on your Twitter profile and click on it. At first glance, if they like what they see/read on your blog, then that might lead them to your company web page where they may or may not do business with you. See the pattern now?

The benefits of blogging are many, and what's great is that to set up a blog on the Internet is totally free! The most popular blog hosts out there right now are Blogger and Wordpress. Both offer an array of neat features to help you get started, and after you've tried both, you might find that you like one over the other. Still, at the end of the day, it comes down to content and page design. Remember that on the Internet, people can click on and off your page in a second. What's the first thing that they're going to see when they click on your page, and how will you keep them engaged? At the end of the day, content is still king. Always proofread what you are writing and keep the design elements on your blog page simple so that people don't have to search for things on your blog.
